Visit Ashley’s apartment and it’s apparent the University of Arizona student is an artist. Her artwork, mostly still life images , fills the walls. “Charcoal is my favorite medium,” she said. “I draw plants, flowers, candles, lots of still life pictures.”
Ashley is working toward an undergraduate degree in Family Studies with a minor in Graphic Design. While she loves her dual major, the art and design classes require expensive tools and textbooks. “They want us to use the newest edition each year, so the books can’t be sold back to the university and it can get very expensive.”
Enter Opportunity Passport™. Ashley learned about the financial literacy and matched savings program while serving on the Young Adult Leadership Board of Fostering Advocates Arizona. Opportunity Passport™ encourages foster care young adults (ages 14-26) to save for assets. They also learn how to build and manage a budget as well as strategies for saving.
After I had saved the $1,000 I needed for books and school supplies, the matching process with Opportunity Passport™ was fast and very easy.”
Ashley is saving for her next asset and considering a car or more books for school. Thanks to Opportunity Passport™, she understands better how to save for important purchases.
I learned that saving money and using it wisely is really important. I didn’t know much about loans and credit so the program has really helped me.”
